Job Title: Program Manager, Adaptation, Aging and the Arrow of Time

Reports to: Vice President for Science (VPS)
Classification: Full- time Exempt (37.5 hours per week)

Position overview

SFI seeks a postdoctoral fellow, advanced graduate student or other qualified individual who is interested in the areas of biological and cultural time, biological clocks, circadian rhythms,  chronobiology, and adaptation and aging research to serve as a program manager.  

Program

The Institute is launching a collaborative research network on Adaptation, Aging, and the Arrow of Time to investigate how fundamental complexity insights and tools developed by SFI could transform our understanding and treatment of aging in natural biological and disease phenomena, social systems, and technology. This is a five-year project.

Job summary 

Under the supervision of the VPS, the program manager will organize workshops and working groups each year and will facilitate the development and population of the academic archiving platform in support of the program.

Responsibilities

  • Each year the program manager, in collaboration with the PIs, application area and core theory group leaders, will organize the following workshops and working groups: 1 General Conference, 1 Advisory Committee, 3 Application Area, and 2 Core Theory meetings.
  • The program manager will work closely with the developer of the academic archiving platform. The platform will act as an ongoing store of references, data, and tools produced during the program. The program manager will encourage and assist researchers in depositing or posting materials, including datasets, to the wiki and in helping them utilize it as a collaborative research space. 
  • As the program evolves, the program manager will be assigned other tasks, which may fall reasonably within the scope of this position, including staffing the origin of life research coordination network.
     

Essential functions

  • Oversees the coordination of all aspects of events including administrative tasks
  • Coordinates budgets and schedules for the program
  • Facilitates academic archiving platform set-up and implementation
  • Manages deadlines, communications, and deliverables to the satisfaction of the PI and other key stakeholders
     

Qualifications

  • Some university graduate experience in the natural sciences preferred, with comprehension of mathematical and science terminology, or a related equivalent combination of education and professional-level work experience.
  • Demonstrated experience organizing and prioritizing tasks, taking initiative, coordinating and assuming responsibility for projects including following through to completion; and balancing the needs of multiple clients.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively under pressure of deadlines and changing and competing priorities. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and proven experience working both independently and as an effective team member.
  • Extensive experience interacting effectively with all levels of employees, including executive staff, junior and senior scientists.
  • Familiarity with multiple electronic systems and software programs in order to work with SFI’s IT staff and developer of our academic archiving platform and provide feedback.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including proofreading, grammar, spelling, punctuation; and accuracy and attention to detail.
