Professional Educator for an Instructor of Special Education Term Hire (Conectado Grant Program)


Highlands University is an open admissions university with over 70% Hispanic or African American with nearly 40% studying at the Master's Degree level. NMHU serves approximately 2,500 undergraduate and graduate students at the main campus in Las Vegas, NM (one hour east of Santa Fe) and another 1300 students at centers in Santa Fe, Rio Rancho, and Albuquerque. The School of Education is comprised of four academic departments including Educational Leadership, Teacher Education, Special Education, and Counseling. The Department of Special Education offers a BA and MA concentrations in the areas of Special Education, Gifted Education, and in Special Education/Elementary Education.

Applications are invited for a nine-month, one-year term faculty position for the 2017-2018 academic year with a contract starting in August 2017. The candidate will design and teach online asynchronous courses for the Department of Special Education, which offers a BA and MA concentrations in the areas of Special Education, Gifted Education, and in Special Education/Elementary Education. This position requires experience with collaboration and co-teaching, as well as teaching diverse learners, and functioning as a university supervisor for student teachers. In addition to teaching 24 semester hours per year, the successful candidate will serve on departmental and school committees, and assist with advising/mentoring undergraduate/graduate students while working with current faculty to build an education program, which supports the diverse populations served by NMHU. The successful candidate will also have or show potential for an active research agenda.

Minimum Requirements: Minimum requirements include a Doctoral degree in the area of Special Education or closely related area. The candidate will have two or more years of experience in the schools as a special education teacher or in related service. They will be capable of teaching and communicating with colleagues and students via electronic and digital modalities. Demonstrated knowledge and experience in various teaching modalities including face-to-face, online asynchronous, and blended learning. ABD will be considered.

Preferred Requirements: In addition to the minimum requirements, the candidate will have five or more years of experience in the schools as a special education teacher or in related service as well as extensive experience teaching in higher education diverse settings. The preferred candidate will be familiar with Quality Matters Standards and have experience designing courses aligned with Quality Matters standards.

Minimum Salary: Assistant $48,000, Associate - $53,452
